{"id":10,"date":"2013-09-02T14:11:10","date_gmt":"2013-09-02T19:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nano-blog.com\/?p=10"},"modified":"2022-09-02T13:19:21","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T18:19:21","slug":"nanotechnology-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.nano-blog.com\/?p=10","title":{"rendered":"nanotechnology research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nanotechnology can be a controversial topic.\u00a0 There are numerous reports that are published showing that a specific nanomaterial (pick your favorite one) is beneficial or is harmful and dangerous.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cagle.com\/2013\/08\/coffee-reports\/\">editorial cartoon<\/a> by Gary Markstein on coffee readily applies to the current state of nanotechnology.\u00a0 Just substitute your favorite material in the place of the word coffee.<\/p>\n<p>So <b>what is the truth<\/b>?\u00a0 One must realize that there are many ways to approach an evaluation of the results of scientific study.\u00a0 Without scientific results, one only has speculation and projections by interested parties.\u00a0 Reported \u201cscientific\u201d findings that do not contain data are suspect.\u00a0 (In a future blog, we will consider the corruption of scientific research.)\u00a0 The purpose of publishing scientific experiments and results is so that others can replicate the experiment and validate the results.\u00a0 The purpose of including data is so that people can understand the significance of the results.\u00a0 A statement that carbon nanotubes have shown effects similar to asbestos in reacting with lung tissue without providing data will cause a reaction to \u201cdo something\u201d immediately.\u00a0 Adding the fact that the carbon nanotubes were made to be extra-long and applied in a very great concentration that would not normally be encountered does not create the same urgency.<\/p>\n<p>The British Royal Society of Chemistry states: \u201cWhile there is no such thing as a safe chemical, it must be realized there is no chemical that cannot be used safely by limiting the dose or exposure.
